How Asror Became a Sports Data Journalist in Australia?

These days, we, millennials have a tough life. Generous jobs are not available as pay rates remain low. At least they are not rising as it was in the 90s and early 2000s. I was one of those millennials, trying to find a proper job and make ends meet. However, I was offered an unusual job as a scout (or data journalist) at DoScouting in one of my desperate days.

It was a casual job that required reporting various sporting events. Events, matches, and competitions are being held all over the world. At the same time, scouts are required to report matches that are close to them. Payments vary from 35 euros to 75 euros. The number of matches to take varies from a few up to more than 30 per month. Of course, this job barely makes the full-time job, but the flexibility and pay rates make it generous work to do in your spare time.

"With all of its generosity, it wasn't easy to become a scout."

It requires a decent understanding of the sporting rules covered and acute attention to detail. Even getting into your first real match coverage is difficult. What the company asks are the several stages of training and testing. First, tutorials and then coverage of some virtual games. You download the videos of some old matches and cover them as the normal real match. If you pass these two stages there will be an interview mainly to check whether it is you (or someone else instead of you) who passed the training. The interviewer may ask any kind of strange questions, like what you should do if some crazy terrorist blows up the stadium.

However, I can understand the strict and strange selection methods of the company. With more than 1000 scouts all over the world, they want to ensure that the right person with the right skills is hired for the job. The failure or ignorance of the scout may cost the company a lot by ruining its reputation and stealing the revenue.

After passing all these selection stages “GOOD LIFE” begins. Traveling to a match when all the costs are covered spending two hours of your time and getting paid a decent fixed fee, is of course, good. But as scouts, we have to be ready for any type of unexpected event. Anytime and at any point, something may get wrong.

Generally, scouting as a data journalist saved me. Back at home I earned extra income other than my main job and enjoyed my life. It also allowed me to travel around the world. Now I have come to Australia, where from the very first week I started earning. I am more than two months in Australia and feel financially safe. Therefore, considering all the benefits scouting has offered me, I think it was worth taking on a long journey to become a data journalist (Asror, 2017).
